The Monkees' Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz have just announced a 14-city spring tour and a new, career spanning live album, titled The Monkees – The Mike & Micky Show. As it stands now, Nesmith and Dolenz' Monkees tour kicks off on April 3rd at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom and wraps on April 26th at Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Along the way, the tour will make stops in Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and Biloxi. There's been no word yet on any Midwest or East Coast gigs.
The Mike & Micky Show Live album, which is due out on April 3rd, features all three of the group's Number One hits — “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer,” “and “Daydream Believer.” Other hits and favorites include “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Randy Scouse Git,” “You Just May Be The One,” “Mary, Mary,” “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Goin’ Down,” “For Pete’s Sake,” and “Porpoise Song.”
The album also features such late-'60s never-before-performed deep cuts as “St. Matthew” and “Auntie’s Municipal Court,” along with recent tracks from 2016's Good Times collection — “Me & Magdelena” and “Birth Of An Accidental Hipster.”
Back when Mike Nesmith first began appearing with the Monkees again, following Davy Jones' 2012 death, we asked Micky Dolenz how he was holding up: “'Nez’ is getting his sea legs, y’know? He’d be the first one to tell ya — the first time we went out on the road (laughs), it was like, a helluva wake-up call — and he stepped up to the plate, but, y'know. . . But, he’d be the one to admit, that was a helluva wake-up call, y’know, hittin’ the road and doin’ four or five shows.”
Noted Beach Boys author, documentarian, and West Coast historian, Jon Stebbins says that the Monkees being passed over for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame an astounding 29 times is the ultimate act of disrespect by the “hipper-than-thou” powers that be: “Can I just say this; that I think one of the hugest stains on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the written history of rock and roll is the fact that the Monkees are somehow expunged from it as being somehow irrelevant and unimportant. (Laughs) Because, dig up the six best album tracks off of, y'know, the Byrds, and the Buffalo Springfield, and Love and everybody else that is deified, y'know, and it isn't as good as the Monkees.”
